VPWA, short for “Volunteer Partnerships for West Africa”, has a mission to support disadvantaged communities within Ghana. Their projects go beyond lifting people out of poverty and try to stimulate a district through promotion of education, clean water, disease control and agriculture. Volunteers are offered an extremely wide range of opportunities such as teaching in classrooms, working in hospitals, using legal means to address child labor issues, and helping orphans. VPWA is looking for volunteers in a wide range of fields, including journalists, teachers, doctors, medical students, lawyers and ordinary university students.

Volunteers are asked to “donate” living expenses, which start from $284 (2 weeks), to support their stay. This gets you a room and two meals per day. On the other hand, VPWA will supply language orientation (the official language is English, but many other languages are spoken), 24 hour support services, an Accra city tour, use of internet and airport pick up and departure free of charge. The center for disease control also requires vaccination for yellow fever when volunteering in Africa.

Most of the VPWA Projects are located in the south-eastern regions of Ghana, primarily Accra, Ashanti and Volta. This area of Ghana is hot and dry in comparison to the rest of Ghana with Harmattan affects during the dry season (November through March) leaving the area much cooler and drier.
